Defusing Demands, Disruption, and Dysfunction: The Skillset
Date: Wednesday, October 30, 2019
Time: 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM mountain/1:00 to 2:00 eastern
Featured expert: Kevin E. O’Connor, CSP
Description: How do you respond to unexpected disruption? Do you fight, flee, freeze? One of my graduate students said, “I flop!”
The real executive skill is to figure it out. How to successfully do that, especially in-the-moment-under-pressure-when-all-eyes-are-on-you…is based on several critical skills we can use in meetings and in one-on-one situations that work to encourage involvement and cooperation.
Objectives: At the completion of this hour the participants will be able to:
- Arrange their meetings in a way that promotes a strong sense of personal involvement, shared purpose, and community.
- Have an immediate skillset to become aware and deal with difficult people and situations.
- Know the difference between healthy disruption and not-so-healthy dysfunction.
- Muster the courage to try new skills in your next situation, even under pressure…at work and at home!
Kevin E. O’Connor, CSP is a speaker, consultant, and educator specializing in working with professionals who are charged with leading their peers.
Kevin sub-specializes in influence, especially the skills that are critical for engagement and influence when you are not the official leader.
His book (co-authored with Cyndi Maxey, CSP) Present Like A Pro: A Field Guide to Mastering the Art of Business, Professional, and Public Speaking was followed by Speak Up: A Woman’s Guide to Presenting Like A Pro specifically geared to effective presentation techniques for young female executives aspiring to higher levels of leadership and influence. Their latest book, Fearless Facilitation speaks to how teams, audiences, and members of the C-Suite can be involved in our work and presentations as more than simply passive listeners.
He is currently writing a book on dotted-line influence within organizations—those colleagues and departments who don’t have to listen or agree but who are nonetheless vital to our work…and how to make action happen in organizations. He is one of only 600 persons in the world to hold the CSP, Certified Speaking Professional, designation for speaking and presenting excellence.
Kevin presents over 80 times per year in the United States and Europe, teaches six graduate school classes at Loyola University of Chicago, and it happiest on the back of a horse…although he has no plans to do all of that at the same time!
