Description
No matter how smart you are, your brain still seems to get the best of you when you are under pressure, worried about change, or just too busy. Your brain has a mind of its own. Yet you can outsmart your brain and make more powerful choices if you know what emotional triggers drive your behavior. You can ease your tension, adapt to changing scenarios, and create better alignment in your conversations with a foundational skills and knowledge in emotional intelligence.
This program will help you understand and sometimes laugh at how your brain works so you can consciously choose how to best use your time, your mind, and your skills in unpredictable situations. You can become the master, not the victim of your brain.
- Become emotionally self-aware so you can “catch your emotions” before you react.
- Identify your emotional triggers and choose how best to act when stressed.
- Establish an emotional connection with others to ease their worries and discover new solutions together.
- Practice a four-step process for being present so you can override your reactive brain for greater adaptability.
- Use Beginner’s Mind to see beyond problems to possibilities.

- Establish an emotional connection with others to ease their worries and discover new solutions together.
- Practice a four-step process for being present so you can override your reactive brain for greater adaptability.
- Use Beginner’s Mind to see beyond problems to possibilities.
Timed Outline
9:00 to 10:30
The program begins with a lively presentation describing how emotions factor into decisions and behavior long before the logical brain comes online. This interactive session provides a look at what triggers emotions, especially under pressure, so participants can apply the skills they learn in the following sessions. They will also learn how to notice when emotions show up in their bodies, allowing them to “catch” their emotions before they react. This skill will help them align with other people more positively and create a more inviting workplace.
10:45 to 12:15
The next two parts of the program will focus on examples, stories, and exercises so participants learn how to:
- Discover personal emotional triggers and increase sensitivity and empathy for what triggers emotions in others.
Key Concept: What has helped you to be a success is what you dearly defend, hindering adaptability and collaboration.
“Anyone can become angry – that is easy. But to be angry with the right person, to the right degree, at the right time, for the right purpose, and in the right way – this is not easy.” – Aristotle
- Exercise: Identify your top three triggers and what sets them off. Share discoveries to increase awareness of the diversity of triggers even in an environment where people seem to have similar interests and a common purpose.
- Explore typical triggers during times of organization change and environmental chaos.
2. Use a technique to shift into the “optimal productive state” to make the best emotional, relationship, and task-related decisions in the moment.
“When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.” – Viktor Frankl
- Exercise: Play the Emotional Intelligence Game to identify how to shift emotions when telling a story.
- Practice a 4-step process for shifting emotions to better adapt to difficult situations.
1:00 to 2:30
Develop awareness of emotional states and triggers in others to be able to move conversations forward positively and creatively.
“In the beginner’s mind, there are many possibilities. In the expert, there are few.” – Suzuki Roshi.
- Exercise: Shift listening position to better understand and connect with others.
- Experience “beginner’s mind” to remove judgment and increase sensitivity and empathy in a changing, unpredictable workplace.
